The character is required to sneak through a series of environments while staying out of sight of guards and performing silent assassinations. Aggregate scores for the game hold in the 90% range at website Metacritic, and it received eight perfect scores from media outlets. The game received critical acclaim from reviewers. Cutscenes for the game are rendered in a Saturday-morning cartoon animation style. The game follows the story of a nameless ninja in the present day, and features a conflict between ancient ninja tradition and modern technology.

A remastered version was released on Octofor Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows, macOS and Linux.
